The Girl With The Bumps on her Neck (and Chest and Face)

So, a nameless yet longtime fan writes:

Alright, my little miracle worker... dry, flaky skin + little bumpies on my face, neck, chest, and back (almost like raised black heads and mini pimples) = miserable me. I exfoliate, moisturize, take my vitamins, but I can't use sunscreen, because it makes me break out... I think I'm allergic to all chemicals found in the normal stuff. It's depressing, really. Especially the fact that my chest feels like braille without having the red bumps. I hate having dry skin, plus spots. In the winter it's even worse, I get flaky.

OK so here's my take on this (since I'm not exactly a skincare expert): First I would recommend cleaning your phone with some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball, well and often. It seems so obvious once you hear it, but not a lot of people do it. Then, go see an Allergist. If I knew then what I know now, there would have been much fewer dirty bathroom mirrors in my parents' house. If you can rule out a food or (God forbid) beverage cause, you're halfway there.

I say start out with some bare bones skincare. Since I've been pregnant and everyone has been telling me everything I use or eat is poison to the baby, so I've gone back to good old, hypoallergenic, fragrance-free Clinique 7 Day Scrub Cream, Mild Liquid Soap, and Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion (in the pump). I'm not using toner because 1) I think it's useless and 2) Salicylic Acid is bad for the baby.

If all else fails, see a Dermatologist.

Good luck, nameless wonder!!!

  1. As far as pregnancy and skin care goes, the best thing to remember is that 70% of what we put ON our skin is absorbed THROUGH our skin and INTO our bodies... with that said, our fluids nourish the baby, so if you eat a cheeseburger from McD's the baby gets to eat it too, if you wear the chemicals (that are probably in a cheeseburger from McD's) they get absorbed into your body, you get the pattern.
